PENINA

The first golf course to be built in the Algarve, Penina is considered the masterpiece of Sir Henry Cotton. It was the location of the Portuguese Open in 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1982. As well as the main course, it has two further sets of nine holes.

Situated in the heart of the Algarve, the Penina championship course is considered the most brilliant project of Sir Henry Cotton, triple champion of the British Open. This was also the first golf course to be built in the Algarve, back in 1966. The experienced Henry Cotton was one of the first to recognize the Algarve's huge potential as a golfing destination. The quality and the success of his work encouraged the subsequent construction of many other courses that now exist in the region.

The Penina course has numerous bunkers, 360,000 trees, plenty of water and wide greens. It also has a vast tee area, making this a real championship course. The sequence of the holes is very original, for the last nine holes both begin and end with two par 5.

Subsequently another nine holes have been added to the course (Monchique Course), and there is also a small course - the Quinta - for experienced players with a very short nine holes placed between the fairways of the championship course.

Due to development works, both the Championship Course and the Quinta Course will be closed for play from 5th September 1994 to 4th September 1995. The Monchique Course will be open, as well as the Golf Academy.
